Adult Fundamentals At Tampa BJJ
The Adult Fundamentals program is where most Tampa BJJ members begin their journey. It's built for one person specifically: the adult who has never grappled a day in their life and wants to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu the right way. If that's you, you're in exactly the right place — and you're in good company, because the majority of our members started right here.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can look intimidating from the outside. From the inside, it's a step-by-step skill you build one position at a time. Our fundamentals curriculum breaks the art into digestible pieces — escapes, control positions, submissions, and the concepts that tie them together — so you're never guessing what to do next.
Who This Class Is For
- Complete beginners who want a real, structured start — not to be thrown into hard sparring on day one
- Adults looking for a smarter workout that builds real self-defense skill
- Busy professionals who want an outlet that clears the head and builds discipline
- Anyone returning to training after time off who wants to rebuild a clean foundation
What You'll Learn
- Positional basics: guard, mount, side control, and back control — and how to move between them
- How to stay safe: framing, escapes, and getting out of bad spots calmly
- Foundational submissions and the setups that make them work
- How to use leverage and technique to handle bigger, stronger opponents
- Mat etiquette, safe training habits, and how to be a great partner
How The Program Works
Every fundamentals class follows a clear arc: a joint-friendly warm-up, a focused technique of the day, guided drilling with a partner, and — when you're ready — light, controlled positional rounds. Coaches walk the mat the entire time, correcting details and answering questions so nothing stays confusing for long.
There's no ego on our fundamentals mat. Nobody is trying to smash the new person. Higher belts who join in are there to help you learn, flow, and build confidence at a pace that works for you. You control your intensity, you tap early and often while you're learning, and you leave every class a little sharper than you walked in.
Consistency is the secret. Two or three classes a week is plenty to see real progress in your first couple of months — better movement, calmer under pressure, and that first satisfying moment when a technique clicks in live training.
Why Train Fundamentals At Tampa BJJ
We treat the beginner experience as the most important thing we do. A great first 90 days is what turns a curious visitor into a lifelong grappler, so we invest in it heavily — clear teaching, patient coaching, and a welcoming room.
You're never just a number here. Coaches learn your name, your goals, and where you're stuck, then help you get unstuck. That's the New Tampa community difference.
Class Times
Adult Fundamentals runs weekly in the evening (see the schedule for exact times), with additional Adults Gi classes you can layer in as you progress.
